Synopsis
The Last Guy on Earth follows veteran NHL goalie Jethro Hale and Colorado Cougars head coach Clay Powers, former teammates whose unresolved relationship ended badly fifteen years earlier. Jethro has spent his entire career in Detroit, winning championships and becoming one of the league’s most respected goalies. At thirty-seven, however, his performance has begun to decline, and Detroit unexpectedly trades him to Colorado in the middle of the season. The trade is especially painful because Colorado is coached by Clay, who reacts angrily when management acquires Jethro without consulting him. Members of the organisation overhear Clay saying that Jethro is the last player he would want, deepening Jethro’s humiliation. Neither man admits that their hostility comes from an intimate history they have never properly discussed. Fifteen years earlier, Jethro and Clay were young professional players sharing a cheap apartment. Clay was anxious, ambitious and desperate to improve their struggling team, while Jethro was quiet, emotionally guarded and grateful for the stability Clay created through cooking, friendship and everyday companionship.
