Contested follows Sebastian Nguyen and Marcos Reyes, two Australian rules football players whose rivalry began when they were teenagers. Sebastian transfers to the Melbourne Mustangs hoping for a fresh beginning, but his arrival places him on the same team as Marcos, the one person who has always been able to provoke him. Their situation becomes worse when Marcos is given the position Sebastian expected to play, turning their old competition into a daily struggle for status. Sebastian has spent years hiding his sexuality. He is attracted to men but fears what would happen if his family, teammates or the wider football world discovered the truth. He deals with that fear by keeping people at a distance and directing much of his anger toward Marcos. Marcos, meanwhile, has always considered himself straight and does not understand why Sebastian affects him so strongly. Their hostility disrupts training. They argue, challenge each other and occasionally become physically aggressive, forcing the Mustangs’ staff to warn them that their personal history cannot damage the team.
