Synopsis
Heartbeat Retreat follows Bobby-Lee Montgomery, the star quarterback and captain of the L.A. Thunderwolves, and Steven Russell, a once-famous rock musician whose career and personal life have collapsed. Both men arrive at the Heartbeat Lodge recovery retreat near Big Bear Lake after serious injuries, only to discover that they have been assigned the same room. Bobby-Lee has torn several ligaments and damaged the meniscus in his knee, leaving him terrified that his football career may be over. The Thunderwolves have continued winning without him, and he worries that the team no longer needs its captain. Steven has broken his pelvis and several vertebrae after falling in his bathroom. The accident came after months of rehabilitation for substance abuse, financial ruin and destructive behaviour that destroyed his reputation. The two men immediately hate each other. Bobby-Lee knows Steven as the man who mistreated Nuria, a close friend of Bobby-Lee’s family. Steven abandoned Nuria after four years together, leaving her to raise his daughter, Emeline, and later humiliated her with cruel and sexist remarks.
